Outdoor entertainment spaces are on everyone's wish list right now, and for good reason - whether it’s hosting parties on the patio, enjoying movies under the stars, or cheering on your favorite sports team from the comfort of your backyard. Choosing the right outdoor TV or display for these spaces is more important than ever, and that’s where IP ratings (Ingress Protection) come into play.
IP ratings tell you how well a TV or display is protected against water, dust, and other outdoor elements, which is crucial for ensuring durability and performance in any weather condition. At MirageVision, a trailblazer in outdoor TV and display innovation, our award-winning weatherproof TVs have been a top choice for thousands.
We deliver more than just weatherproof screens; we redefine outdoor entertainment. Our high-bright TVs are engineered using premium platforms from leading manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, and others, ensuring both cutting-edge technology and uncompromising performance. We specialize in high-quality outdoor TVs and commercial displays with IP ratings designed to withstand the elements while delivering crystal-clear visuals.
If you’ve been wondering which IP rating is best for your outdoor TV or display, we’ve got you covered.
An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is a standardized measurement system created by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which ensures consistency and reliability across industries. It grades how well a device's enclosure protects electrical components from external forces like solids (like dust) and liquids (like water).
The IP rating uses a Two-digit code system:
First digit: Measures solid protection (scale of 0 = no protection, to 6 = dustproof).
Second digit: Measures liquid protection (scale of 0 = no protection, to 9K = protection from high-pressure water at close range).
For outdoor TVs and displays, an adequate IP rating means the difference between a device that withstands harsh conditions and one that quickly deteriorates. Dust, rain, extreme heat, or even direct sunlight can wreak havoc on electronics. Outdoor TVs endure much harsher conditions than their indoor counterparts, so the proper IP rating prevents malfunctions and extends its lifespan, saving costs and frustration in the long run.
Here’s a quick breakdown of IP ratings:
IP = Prefix for the rating
First Digit = Indicates protection from solid particles like dust
Second Digit = Indicates protection from water; from light splashes to high-pressure water jets
For outdoor TVs and displays, choosing the right balance of solid and liquid protection can heavily influence their durability and performance. Typically, IP55 or IP65 are recommended to ensure robust protection. For an even better seal, consider IP66.
At MirageVisionTV, we specialize in IP56-rated outdoor TVs for residential use and IP66-rated outdoor displays for commercial use.
Understanding specific IP ratings is essential when choosing an outdoor TV. Here’s a breakdown of the most common ratings for outdoor devices:
An IP55-rated outdoor TV provides limited dust protection and resistance to water jets from garden hoses but falls short of full waterproofing. Not entirely waterproof.
Best For: Residential patios, decks, or semi-covered outdoor areas. Spaces where TVs are protected from extreme weather or direct water contact.
Benefits: Affordable option for homeowners who want weatherproof TVs for occasional outdoor use.
Testing: Ensures resistance to dust ingress and water sprays from all sides.
Key Features: An internal fan cools the TV during heat, but it’s not built for extreme weather conditions - more moderate outdoor climates. Focused on convenience and light outdoor use, IP56-rated TVs are ideal for occasional users who prioritize entertainment in moderately controlled environments.
IP55-rated TVs are ideal for homeowners who don’t require full waterproofing for their outdoor TVs but want dependable safeguards from dust and rain. These are used in consumers' backyards and typically for only a few hours per day or night.
For the ultimate outdoor performance, an IP65-rated outdoor display offers maximum protection against dust and water, even under the most extreme conditions.
Best For: Exposed outdoor equipment like surveillance cameras, high-end outdoor displays, or industrial settings. Unpredictable weather conditions, including heavy storms or direct sunlight.
Benefits: Ultimate durability and reliability. Ensures your display withstands extreme exposure and continues to perform flawlessly. Outdoor displays endure even harsher conditions than Outdoor TVs.
Testing: High-end outdoor displays in highly unpredictable environments. Fully dustproof. Water-resistant even against powerful jets (12.5mm/0.49in) from any direction.
Key Features: IP66-rated displays provide unmatched protection, giving you peace of mind even during heavy rain, dust storms, or other extreme conditions. Perfect for year-round performance.
For those valuing the best-in-class outdoor performance, IP66-rated displays offer unmatched peace of mind knowing your device can handle intense weather, making it perfect for extreme climates or commercial-grade applications.
💡 Key Takeaway: Choose your IP rating based on your outdoor environment. If you’re in a mild climate, IP56 might suffice, but harsher weather demands a higher rating like IP66.
Choosing the correct IP rating heavily depends on your intended environmental use. Here’s a quick recap to help you decide:
IP55: Perfect for residential use, these TVs can handle dusty environments and light water exposure, but they’re not built to endure extreme weather or total water immersion.
IP65: The epitome of durability - these TVs are ideal for commercial settings. The complete dust-tight and heavy rain resistance make them the gold standard for weatherproof applications.
IP66: Offer maximum protection against dust and powerful water jets, making them ideal for extreme weather conditions and commercial outdoor environments.
The biggest difference between outdoor TVs meant for a residential setting as opposed to a display for commercial and industrial applications comes down to protection against dust and water ingress:
Residential TVs (IP56): These offer limited protection, suitable for mild weather conditions but vulnerable to heavy rains or extreme heat.
Commercial/Industrial Displays (IP66): Designed to endure harsh conditions, they are completely sealed against dust and resistant to strong water jets.
Using outdoor TVs and displays with the right IP rating ensures:
1 . Longevity:
Protects electronics from moisture and dust entering the system.
Extends product lifespan in harsh conditions. High IP ratings achieve this through advanced sealing techniques.
2. Performance:
Prevents overheating caused by exposure to sunlight or poor ventilation. TVs with higher IP ratings often come with high-temperature panels to handle extreme heat.
Eliminates risks like sunspots or isotropic blackouts, where overheating damages the screen permanently.
3. Peace of Mind:
Avoids costly replacements or repairs due to environmental damage.
Provides confidence that your investment is built to endure.
An outdoor TV or display without adequate protection can face several issues, including:
Overheating and Sun Damage: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can create “sunspots” on the screen or even cause Isotropic damage - a black spot appears on the hottest section as the liquid crystals heat and melt.
Dust and Water Intrusion: Without proper sealing, moisture and dust can affect the electronic components, shortening the TV’s lifespan.
Failing Under Extreme Conditions: TVs with low IP ratings are prone to malfunction when exposed to heavy rainfall or dust storms.
Using TVs with higher IP ratings eliminates these risks, ensuring reliable performance and extended durability.

"Thank you MirageVision for a great product that really has complimented my home here in St. Pete,
Florida. Being one of the original “Sharks” on the TV Series “Shark Tank,” I have seen many products and
companies that do not live up to their promises. Several years ago, I purchased several MirageVision
Outdooor TVs for my home and boat. Living in Florida, I was a little concerned about installing a TV
outdoors in Florida’s humid, rainy and hot weather, even one that is specially made for outdoor use. I
just wanted to thank you guys for a great product and great customer service, especially Duncan, as he has
been great answering all of my questions."
Kevin Harrington | “Mr. Made for TV”
MirageVision:
We are here today representing Global Outdoor Concepts. We are the makers of MirageVision Outdoor
Televisions/Digital Signs and have been in business since 2004, turning name-brand LCD/LED TVs into Mirage
Vision Outdoor TVs, made for permanent outdoor use.
We are here today in Las Vegas at the corporate offices of MGM Resorts to interview Mr. Scott Sibella,
president and COO of MGM Grand Resorts. We've been discussing with him about the commercial customers out
there, just how little they understand about Outdoor TVs and Digital Sign Display applications. Why is
good picture quality important in commercial outdoor environments? Those locations that have outdoor bars,
restaurants, pools or cabanas.... sometimes ask, why not just use a regular indoor TV?
Scott Sibella:
In today's world, it’s completely different than it was in the past, if someone wants a TV in an outdoor
environment over a bar, cabana, or near a pool, etc. They would just buy an indoor TV and install it
outdoors. What we realized today is the importance of safety and what could happen if you didn't have the
right type of TV for the right application. We would just plug-in indoor TVs in the past, not knowing what
the effect or liabilities could be. When you're around water and you're outside (in the different
elements) it's important to have the right TV that's customized and made to work in the outside
environment. For those different reasons you know... it boils down to the safety of the guests and the
safety of our employees, and the safety of the assets that we need to always protect.
MirageVision:
The safety issue is always the most important, especially since the many guests MGM brings in, whether
it's by the bars, outdoor dining or the pool area. But, as far as the picture quality, we've installed
several of our MirageVision TVs in your MGM properties... have you seen the picture quality for yourself?
Scott Sibella:
So, besides the safety issue of it - that's really the most important thing in today's world... the
picture is incredible! The picture quality is outstanding, the clarity is good and it really works well
with the daytime sunlight. It doesn't reflect off, like you would normally see with an indoor TV. All
those things that you take into consideration makes it (Mirage Vision TV) a much better product out
there... when compared to using a regular indoor TV. That’s why I have personally purchased several
MirageVision Outdoor TVs for my home in Southern California.
MirageVision:
We know you're a very busy person and our company appreciates your true comments. And we really honor our
relationship with you and the MGM Resort Properties.
